He later quit his job and setup his own clinic in Tindivanam. His nominal fee and great service made him famous and people, from all over the district, began pouring to his clinic. However, his close encounter with poverty and suffering of his rural patients, aroused his social sense and started involving in social life after his working hours.Eventually he founded SAMUGA SEVAI MAIYAM –SOCIAL SERVICE CENTRE,which later became VANNIYAR SANGAM –VANIYAR FEDERATION in 1980.

While working with vaniyar Sangam, ‘Maruthuvar Ayya’ spearheaded many notable protests in 1980s, at the culmination of which he earned the Most Backward Class Status, not just to Vaniyars, but also to  hundreds of  other socially unprivileged sections. Now a hero to the oppressed classes, he felt the need for a political foothold and floated Patalli Makal katchi -Politerarian people’s party in 1989.

Since then, he has been working tirelessly towards  he upliftment of  unprivileged communities in Tamil nadu. He establishing of two colleges – Saraswathy Arts and Science College and Saraswathi enginnering ,in Tindivanam District— Tuition, hostel accommodation and food are free for these students, who hail predominantly from poor rural families.

Defying his vaniayar tag on him, he once stormed into a little village called kodithangi near kumbakonam where he carried dalit corpses through the vaniayar dominated areas and conducted his funeral.Though this attracted contempt from the Vaniyars, Comrade Thirumavalavan, leader of Viduthali Chiruthaigal Katchi, hailed him as ‘Tamil kothithangi’ –  Tamil flag bearer.
